DHL opens climate-neutral CityHub for Leeuwarden area

Yesterday saw the official opening of DHL eCommerce's new Leeuwarden CityHub. From the climate-neutral building at Brailleweg 4 in industrial park Newtonpark in Goutum, all parcels have been delivered for Leeuwarden and the surrounding area for several months now.  The opening was previously postponed so as not to disrupt the usual peak season at the end of the year. Alderman Reitsma, responsible for Work and Economy among other things within the municipality of Leeuwarden, welcomed DHL: "In this CityHub we see the power of local entrepreneurship combined with the scale of a global logistics company like DHL with which Leeuwarden gains green city distribution and employment."

This CityHub is the eighth climate-neutral branch DHL is opening in the Netherlands. CityHub Leeuwarden is part of a comprehensive 350 million euro investment program. This includes building 27 climate-neutral CityHubs according to the highest sustainability standard (BREEAM Outstanding).  DHL Leeuwarden is also gas-free and equipped with solar panels, which are used to charge the 17 electric delivery vans. There are also 5 delivery vans running on fossil-free HVO-100 diesel.  The daily volume is approximately 6,000 packages for households, stores and businesses in and around Leeuwarden, from Stiens, Giekerk, Hardegarijp, Grou to Dronrijp. That number is growing to 10,000 packages a day. At the CityHub itself, more than 20 employees take care of sorting parcels and planning routes. The CityHub employs over 70 employees including 50 who deliver parcels one or more days a week. In previous months, similar sustainable branches opened in Almere, Zoetermeer, Geleen, Breda, Nijmegen, Tilburg and Roermond. Soon, DHL will also open CityHubs in Amsterdam, Aalsmeer and Groningen. The remaining locations will follow later in 2023 and 2024.

The DHL CityHub has a service point where packages can be picked up and dropped off. Also, the CityHub is always looking for enthusiastic delivery drivers with driving license who would like to work a few hours a week.
